Moors are not just wetlands. They are complex ecosystems created by water and the decomposition of plant material. These unique habitats are home to an incredible variety of animal and plant species that are adapted to the special conditions of this environment. The importance of moors for biodiversity is high, as they provide protection and habitat for many rare and endangered species.

Hotspots of biodiversity

The moors in Kleinwalsertal are no exception. Moors such as the Hörnlepassmoor, the Wildmoos and the moors in the Schwarzwassertal valley are home to a rich variety of plants that have adapted perfectly to the damp, acidic and nutrient-poor conditions. From colorful peat mosses to rare orchid species and the fascinating sundew - a carnivorous plant that only grows in bogs and catches small insects. But it's not just the animals and plants that make these areas so special.

The moors in Kleinwalsertal are also invaluable from an ecological point of view. They serve as natural water reservoirs and help to regulate the water balance. In addition, moors are effective carbon sinks that help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Valuable natural jewels with global significance

Vorarlberg has a special responsibility here, as 1/4 of all moors in Austria are located in Vorarlberg and Kleinwalsertal, with its large number of moors, plays an important part in this. Only 3% of the world's land area is peatland habitat. However, they store 30 % of global CO2, which is about twice as much as the total biomass of all the world's forests. Our peatlands are therefore essential for reducing the CO2 content in the atmosphere.

Despite their importance, the moors in Kleinwalsertal and worldwide are under threat. Humans have often contributed to the destruction of these sensitive ecosystems through drainage, agricultural use and other interventions. This makes it all the more important to raise awareness of their significance and to highlight the important functions of these ecosystems.
